Everything we teach, free to use

We are a nonprofit, so there is no reason to keep any of this behind a door. The trainer our students learn on and the slides our volunteers teach from are both published here: for teachers, for schools we have never visited, and for any group that wants to run the same day themselves.

The trainer

SPIKE Academy

A SPIKE Prime trainer built for Taiwanese classrooms

A bilingual SPIKE Prime trainer we built ourselves, because nothing we could find taught block coding in 繁體中文 at the level a Taiwanese child actually needs. Children learn it here, then apply the same program to the physical robot. Our teaching is built on FIRST LEGO League, and the mission challenges come from the current season.

  • Seven units of block coding, then an optional Python track for children who want to write real code
  • English and 繁體中文, with one language on screen at a time, switched with one button
  • Mirrors the real SPIKE App 3 blocks, so what a child learns transfers directly
  • Runs in a browser with nothing to install, and saves progress on the device

New: version 2

Version 2 wraps the trainer in a game-style learning path. It is in English only for now, while version 1 stays fully bilingual.

  • A guided path of short lessons, with a quiz along the way
  • Zero, a robot mascot, gives hints and celebrates with the child
  • Streaks, gems and hearts make daily practice feel like a game
  • A free-build simulator for programming a robot on a mission mat, plus a 3D view for robots built from LEGO CAD files

Classroom slides

The decks our volunteers teach from

These are the actual slides used on the day. There is one deck per school or trip rather than one per topic, because that is how we build them. Open one, or take a copy into your own Google Drive and change whatever you need.

Video

FLL Submerged Intro

We use this in sessions to introduce the season before the children start building. It is on our YouTube channel, so you can use it in your own classroom exactly as we do.

SUBMERGED is the FIRST LEGO League season set on the ocean floor, and the missions on our mats come straight from it: releasing a sample, raising a mast, moving a shipwreck without knocking it over. Watching the season film first means the children know what the models on the mat are meant to be before they are asked to reach them, which saves explaining it twice.

Tools we built

What else have we built for teachers?

RoboCoach is an AI-powered Chrome extension that helps FLL teams learn to program faster and more independently, with instant guidance, debugging help and step-by-step explanations. We built it after pastors we trained in rural Taiwan told us coding was the hardest part to teach. It now has more than 200 monthly users in five or more countries, including Taiwan, Vietnam, Korea, Germany and the United States. At the request of the mentors we trained, we also made Mandarin FLL video tutorials on SPIKE Prime control and sensors.

Using our materials

How can you use these materials?

You may use, copy, translate and adapt everything on this page, including for your own program, at no cost and without asking us first. We ask only that you credit RoboYouth Taiwan and do not resell the materials. If you do use them, please tell us. We are asking for one reason: it is the only way we can document our impact. We cannot count a class we never hear about, and those numbers are what let us keep the whole curriculum free.
